A car phone holder looks like a small purchase, but in the Gulf it has to survive a dashboard that reaches 70°C in July, a phone that keeps getting bigger, and a road where you should never look down. Here is how we choose.
1. Magnetic vs clamp
Magnetic mounts are one-handed: the phone snaps on and off. They work with any phone that has a magnetic ring (built-in on recent iPhones, or via a thin metal plate). Clamp mounts grip the phone physically and cost less, but need two hands and cover part of the screen. 2. Where it sits
Air vent: keeps the phone cool and out of the sun, but heavy phones can droop soft vent blades. Dashboard (3M adhesive): the most stable — clean the surface with alcohol, press for 30 seconds and wait 24 hours before hanging a phone. Windscreen suction: avoid in summer; the cup softens and lets go.
3. Charging while you drive
If your drive is longer than 20 minutes, a mount that charges is worth it. Look for 10–15W wireless charging and an automatic clamp that opens when the phone approaches. Wireless charging in a hot car generates heat, so pick a mount with vents or an aluminium back.
4. Heat checklist
Metal or ABS body (no cheap PVC), no suction cup, no rubber that gets sticky, and a magnet rated above 800 g. Everything in our car mounts collection passes this list.
